Microsoft lifts the veil on the design surface, the tablet Windows RT / 8. One can not appreciate the device and operating system related, but it is always interesting to take a look behind the scenes of the design of an electronic terminal, especially since it was for Microsoft to engage in the production of new equipment after the Xbox and Zune deceased.
Panos Panay is in charge of touch tables PixelSense (formerly Surface) who inherited the project: it was to be launched at the same time as Windows 8, and if several designs have been conceived, it is ultimately the "form factor "of the tablet that has been selected.
The small team of 12 people has multiplied prototypes "Georgetown" (code name for the area RT), led by the obligation to maintain absolute secrecy - should not be made a partner manufacturer perfume at the risk of altering its relationship with Microsoft. The timing is also a secret: officially, the "vision" based Windows 8 tiles was validated before the launch of the first iPad in 2010.

Design prototypes massively used 3D printing for rapid results convincing cases for the tablet, but also for Touch Cover / Type. The case / keyboard was a strong demand for Microsoft, which has caused headaches for the team. In the end, this device has been hailed as a success by critics. Special editions and additional colors will be available as well in the near future.
The design of the Surface Pro, codenamed "Georgetown X" began three months after that of the RT area, not because of a delay due to possible technical problems, but simply a lack of time and availability of the team. As for the next generation of Surface, Microsoft and Panay are on the spot. Despite not really obvious success, Redmond remains confident that the tablet has a future.
