HRW Co-operates with local business for students Providing a MicroSoft PixelSense

Besides all theory plays mainly the practical relevance of the Ruhr University West an important role. Therefore, students could participate in a project HRW week in a creative competition, which is focused on the development of concepts for the so-called multi-touch tables. The competition was organized by Prof. Dr. Stefan Geisler, Director of Studies in the program man-machine interaction, and applied computer science, organized and supported by the Essen-based company aaitechnologies GmbH. The winning groups presented their results today and have received sponsored vouchers worth a total of 900 euros.

Almost every show that has something to do with technology, you can now known as multi-touch tables, which can be operated by hand, fingers, elbows or other moving objects. With multi-touch screens is not a normal computer, but they live by their unusual user interface. Actions can not only - like the iPhone - with two to four fingers to perform, but there are also several people can simultaneously work on multiple pages at a table, because the number of points of contact, which evaluates the device imposes no limits. Furthermore, exchanges of Pixel Sense - a product from Samsung - in joint development with Microsoft, the detection of individual objects that are placed on the table.

The role of students in the creative competition HRW now was that you should develop in the light of the characteristics of the medium, and in view of the software applications and innovative interaction concepts for multi-touch tables. For this, they brought André rollercoaster Meier, Managing Director at aaitechnologies, first verify that the device closer and asked them one also available on loan. In the next step, participants should then develop their ideas and put them into an application design. Came out seven different project ideas. The winning works were presented on Friday and won the first five winning works with vouchers worth 500 euros, 250 euros and 50 euros three times. The works ranged from a recipe consultant at the supermarket, a HRW learning and library system to a new application for traffic planning. The winner was Stephan Lucka, Student in the first half human-computer interaction to put up with his idea, such a table in the supermarket. The table recognizes it and displays it on stored food matching recipes or nutritional values.

"Multi-touch tables are not in terms of user rudimentary compared to conventional machines. They live on exciting applications that take into account the unusual operation. The development of application and interaction concepts therefore requires a high degree of creativity ", Prof. Dr. Stefan Geisler, a professor of computer science at the Institute Ruhr University West. "The more I am pleased with the good results, because the students have developed with a lot of perseverance and originality sometimes very convincing concepts. It's not easy to lift such a project in the allotted time, if you have to do is become familiar with the technology and the software, "said Professor Geisler further.

André also rollercoaster Meier, Managing Director of aaitechntechnologies is pleased with the results: "In addition to the fun of a project with students makes it easy to us but it was also about to deepen the contact with the HRW total. In our area, the project developer and designer for technical projects in the field of infrastructure and networks, the young talent is an important thing. We are always looking for talented and gain such projects simply offer a good opportunity to get to know each other. "

The creative competition began in late November 2012 with a term of a total of seven weeks. On 15 January ranged seven project groups their work. The evaluation of projects was jointly taken by Professor Geisler and André Meier rollercoaster based on criteria such as originality, degree of innovation, scope of the concept and use of the special features of the table.
