Inside Microsoft PixelSense

 EXPERIENCE_H4H9764

Launch of Microsoft Surface tablet means that the previous product that was known was renamed the Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft PixelSense. But the larger 40-inch touchscreen table that is so popular in the exhibition and events has also been recently updated. We sat with some of the first Microsoft partners to develop content for Surface / PixelSense to talk about how the new system differs from the original, and that designers should keep in mind when optimization impressions events and exhibitions.

Size and detection

The unit itself is much thinner than the previous version, which was about a foot and a half deep and stood on its own as a piece of furniture. Now, the 40-inch screen has a bevel four inches around the outside of the screen, with a depth of about four inches. Factor all-in-one form has a computer he built unit itself.

The depth of the previous unit area needed for infrared cameras embedded in feel where users were touching the screen. There are no cameras in the new version, it incorporates detection technology vision within an LCD screen."What continues to make it unique among most other touch multi-user detection platforms there is that it is based on the vision. It can actually see the shadow of your finger, it can give you the direction of your finger and the amount of rotation. Which is great in a multiuser scenario, because if you can see in what sense is a finger, you can play UI controls so that 'they automatically face the user that has affected, "said Darren Stimulant CEO David.

The operating system PixelSense also got a big boost, upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7. The first version was not an evolutionary perspective OS, while 2.0 is upgraded.

Display

The new LCD product a clearer display, as opposed to the old model based on the projection.

"It is full HD 1920-by-1080, where it was in 1024-by-768 in the previous version. It is visually a much cleaner and clearer, "says Inhance digital co-founder and president Maziar Farzam.InterKnowlogy ceo Emilie Hersh agrees that the caliber of the HD screen is certainly an improvement.

"With many of our health care based on clients it was particularly interesting, because the screen brightness in V1 was not necessarily the expectations of seeing things as radiological images or something where they need clear details. Our customers are health care much more impressed by the clarity and resolution HD is now, "says Hersh.

Recognition

Both versions of tags lever surface / PixelSense recognition marks or an object, a system of eight bits label with 256 different values that allow objects marked with them to interact directly with the screen. In version 2.0, the technology detects PixelSense been at the pixel LCD, so it is a bit more accurate than before.

"The main advantage with PixelSense is object recognition, because it is integrated. If you can think of how to engage and link to a product and the physical object to interact with the table, it really brings the wow factor to "Farzam said.

InterKnowlogy did just that as part of a recent project of Coca-Cola in Atlanta Food & Wine Festival. Designers scored three different SmartWater bottles and encode them into the application. When participants to one of three different bottles on the table that spin information on the event, product line or InterKnowlogy.

"There are all sorts of interactive elements that you can use. QR codes are great because users can break it with their smartphone and they gain experience with them," said Hersh.

Mounting

The first version of the surface was a horizontal display only, but the device is thinner comes with a VESA mount which allows it to be hung vertically from a wall or mounted on an angle, which gives designers the flexibility a little more in the way it can be integrated in an environment.

"When you have tabular, collaboration is much easier, it is true that it is multi-touch environment comes into play. When you put it on the wall, it is clear that you will not have too many people who receive both, so there are some design considerations that must come into play, "says Hersh.

The unit itself can also be programmed to respond to interactions differently depending on how it is mounted, causing a richer experience for the user."It has a built-in accelerometer, the software can meet, so that you can build an application that behaves differently automatically. He knows if the table is horizontal or vertical," says David.

Lighting

Unfortunately, the latest update has not addressed the issue of the sensitivity of the camera to the lighting environment.

"We found Surface 1.0 is very sensitive to lighting environment and we thought the new version would be a great improvement, but unfortunately, it is always the same. When we deploy at trade shows, I warn all those who used to be very aware of the ambient lighting and overhead. certainly it causes interference with infrared touch technology, "says Farzam.David agreed, saying: "The worst are halogen or incandescent lights or direct-everything that releases a lot of IR light. This results in ghost keys and a user interface can seem kind of fishy. '

Based PixelSense

The current price level of the unit is $ 8.600, which is below the price tag of $ 15,000 V1. Designers should estimate a total cost between $ 9,000 and $ 10,000 shipped, including taxes and mounting brackets. And while the technology is very cool in itself, the content is the real key to success in mobilizing PixelSense.
